Skype

I know people have been “Skyping” for quite some time now, but I never had the need for it.  My phone plan was always unlimited and I wasn’t really calling overseas so much anymore – I used to use prepaid phone cards for that…..how obsolete they are now!  So, recently a friend hounded me until I caved and downloaded Skype.  It’s okay, I guess.  I usually don’ t really want to be on my phone while on my computer and usually prefer to make calls from my mobile phone.  About two weeks after I downloaded it I got a “call”….my computer started beeping at me….from a long time friend that I haven’t spoken to in a few years in Australia.  It was so great to be able to talk with him – FOR FREE!!!!  He was still at work when we spoke, but promised to video call me soon from home and get his little girl on so that I can see her!  That’s going to be so worth so much more than the time it took to download Skype!  I am looking forward to getting back in touch with my overseas friends that I lost touch with over the past few years.  Guess I have to thank that friend who jammed me up about it....damn!
It’s so funny to me that we are so used to being able to video chat now days.  I remember being little and watching the Jetsons thinking how cool it would be to be able to actually have a video phone!  It seemed like such a far off technology back then.  Makes you wonder what’s coming next.

Wacom Tablet

When I took the prerequisite class to this one, Basics of New Media, we used the school Wacom tablets.  I realized how useful they were and decided to buy one for myself.  It’s such a great device for editing photos.  I can’t believe how much time it saves me.  I’m sure most of you know what this is…since as I said the class we used them in is a prerequisite to this class.   As I continue learning how to draw I imagine I am going to fall in love with it even more!  For now I mostly use it for photo editing and it came in handy when I had to sign some contracts on a short deadline for a friend I recorded a song for…

Pen and nibs                   Photos / wacom.com
When I looked at all the choices out there I saw some really cool ones with lcd screens that you can draw directly one – pretty awesome, but CRAZY expensive!  Mine is just the medium sized Intuos 4 which serves my purposes nicely.  The pen has a pretty good variety of nibs, too.  I think I chose a great starter tablet that will last until I have the funds or the necessity to upgrade.
